Can dogs eat bread?

One of the oldest prepared foods in the world is bread. It’s commonly eaten by different cultures around the world from breakfast to dinner. Bread seems so simple and benign but is it safe for dogs?

There is nothing inherently harmful harmful in sharing a plain bread with your dog. However, there are  things to keep in mind in feeding bread. One is the quantity of the bread they eat – snack-sized amounts of plain bread isn’t going to cause any problems for a dog. It can be fed to dogs, but bread can be calorically dense.

Most of the breads are safe for dogs but there are some that can make your dog sick or even kill him. Bread is very dangerous when it contains ingredients that are toxic to dogs like raisin bread. Raisins – like grapes – can cause kidney problems in dogs. Also, bread that contains nuts are dangerous for dogs to consume. Macadamia nuts in particular are toxic to dogs and all nuts are high in fat as high-fat food can lead to gastrointestinal problems like vomiting and diarrhea. Prolonged consumption of high-fat treats can even lead to develop pancreatitis.

It is important to consult your vet before your add bread to your dog’s diet. Whole wheat or grain-based breads are great if you want to add more fiber in your dog’s diet. Plain white bread or French bread are also safe for your dog to eat but they contain less fiber.
